My pottery is inspired by the beauty of mathematics and the dynamics of ocean waves. I want each piece to ask to be touched, handled and used. The art is in the function. Pottery that is used establishes a bond - it's an old friend that provides comfort while at the same time is a work of art containing a bit of the maker's soul.

I am a former art educator, oil painter and print maker, newly converted to ceramic sculpture and newly arrived in exciting Asheville.  My clay sculptures are figurative, and the pieces invite to you participate in their stories.  You'll find work in a variety of sizes, designed for the wall or free standing.

"Each creation I design is a hand built, sculptural, low fired clay form. The surfaces may be impressed and/or incised with a compilation of textures, patterns and symbols. Color is incorporated predominantly through the application of underglazes and oxide stains. Metal, hemp, raffia, and other materials may be added to elaborate and exaggerate the forms. The objective with each piece is to exhibit a contemporary interpretation of primal creations."

And So They Waited

Kat_mciverI experience my art as a radical response and prayer to life. Each piece develops as a deep, evolutionary process, expressing my personal spiritual journey and the vicissitudes of beingness. Each sculpture arises out of an erotic dance between my hands and the clay, as we give, yield, caress, and let go into the unknown. My creative hope is to connect to you, the viewer, at a heart level. I am grateful to you for witnessing my creations, and for the experiences from which the art has emerged.

I am for the most part a self-taught artist, this gives me a certain leeway in the way I create. With no pre-conceived rules to follow I'm free to decide, within the parameters of the material, the form that my pottery will take. I find a lot of my influences in the patterns of nature, the art of the American Southwest, and the carvings of the Northwest Tribes. Above all... it is the power in the smoke and fire that truly creates my work.

My artwork is a passion I grew into out of my passion for nature and all things earthy. One doesn't get much more down to earth than mud.  I love the feel of the wet clay in my hands, and the organic way it forms into pieces that are pleasing to the eye. My personal favorites are pieces that create themselves, that have an energy all their own. Like walking in the woods, I choose a path that appeals to me at the time and follow it through, more as an appreciative spectator than creator, to it’s natural conclusion – often a bowl or a plate, sometimes an unexpected sculptural piece. Having spent years viewing nature through the macro-lens of a camera, I have an acute sense of the beauty to be found in our local flora, which I often incorporate in original form or as stamps into my work. Most of my pieces are functional, and many of them serve dually as wall art or sculpture in the homes of patrons with an appreciation for our natural environment.
