Vase and Sculpture
copper, fold formed

I opened the school Earthspeak Arts in 2003 as an excuse to play with metal all day. The school continues to grow with students coming from around the country and region. When I am not teaching, I get to do my own work which is moving towards larger sculptural pieces in copper, silver, and bronze.

My ceramic work is primarily decorative rather than functional. Forms are mathematically configured with attention to their structure and use, both as individual objects and part of a larger grouping. I consider how the theme of each object will interact to form a family grouping with another.

My current work focuses on personal shrines. It is a visual exploration of my experience in living in different places and transporting my “stuff”, both physical and mental, from one to the next. What do we hold dear? Why do we keep it? and Who is responsible for the baggage? These are the questions that I think of as each new piece emerges.

The Willful Child

As a child, my mom used the word “imagination” but what I heard was “magic nation”. I desperately wanted to know where this “magic nation” was …and when I could visit. She said, “It’s the place you go, where all your dreams come true”. That’s where I live now, in my own “magic nation” where I make art, work in my garden and play with my dogs…a world where anything is possible.

Our collection incorporates bright colors and unique patterns. Meant to be used every day, these pieces can inspire a creative chef, add a little spice to a room, or be used for special occasions.
