The mission of our studio school and rental studio is to promote understanding, appreciation and professional development in the ceramic arts. I work with clay and fire, dreaming the sacred in the moment and bringing that beauty into the literal physical world, into clay.

My ceramic work is primarily decorative rather than functional. Forms are mathematically configured with attention to their structure and use, both as individual objects and part of a larger grouping. I consider how the theme of each object will interact to form a family grouping with another.
My current work focuses on personal shrines. It is a visual exploration of my experience in living in different places and transporting my “stuff”, both physical and mental, from one to the next. What do we hold dear? Why do we keep it? and Who is responsible for the baggage? These are the questions that I think of as each new piece emerges.

The pottery I create comes from my great love of Torah, Talmud and Jewish history. The Judaica that each of us chooses for our home is very personal. For me, the creation of each piece is an act of reclamation. I feel the clay, the earth, the adamah and it pulses with the soul of the Jewish people. I imagine reclaiming that adamah, forming it into something beautiful and useful and sending it back through the fire, not to destroy it, but to strengthen it.
Nelle Fastman Pingree has been an actor and singer/songwriter of contemporary Jewish music for many years. After moving to Asheville, North Carolina, she was introduced to clay and the potter's wheel. She "caught a severe and persistent case of throw-pot" and is now a full time potter.

My pottery is inspired by the beauty of mathematics and the dynamics of ocean waves. I want each piece to ask to be touched, handled and used. The art is in the function. Pottery that is used establishes a bond - it's an old friend that provides comfort while at the same time is a work of art containing a bit of the maker's soul.
